How Gemini decides which contractor to recommend

How Gemini decides which contractor to recommend, and the signals you control
Gemini is the engine most contractors will meet first, because Google puts it on top of search results as AI Overviews and AI Mode. When a homeowner in Frisco types "good pool builder near me," the box at the top of the page is Gemini talking.
Say you build pools out of McKinney. Three crews, 140 Google reviews, a website an agency rebuilt in 2023 that ranks fourth for "pool builder McKinney" and hasn't had a new word added since.
A family in Frisco with a $92,000 budget asks Google's AI box who to call. The box names two competitors, one of them with a third of your reviews. You've never seen that box, and you'd have no idea why you weren't in it.
How does Gemini choose which pages to cite?
It casts the widest net of the chat engines. Orbit Media's 2026 study of 13,184 citations counts about 8.1 sources per Gemini answer, against 4.5 for ChatGPT and 3.6 for Claude. More sources means more places a contractor can be seen, and more places to be absent.
76%
of ChatGPT's most-cited pages were updated in the last month
It also has favorites. The same study found Gemini leans toward Reddit and list-style pages, while ChatGPT prefers primary sources and Claude prefers review sites. The engines agreed on the same domain only 1.7% of the time.
Google's own AI surfaces show the same taste. Peec AI's running tally puts Reddit at number one or two among cited domains on all five major AI engines, and lists YouTube, Reddit and Facebook as the domains Google AI Mode and AI Overviews favor. Not your website. The places other people talk about you.
We saw it ourselves in our 20-prompt roofer test in September. Gemini kept surfacing old Reddit threads where somebody's neighbor had recommended a company, and weighed them like review sites. That surprised us more than anything else in the test. We're rerunning the same prompts monthly, and the Reddit habit is what we'll watch closest.
Do I need to rank on page one to be in an AI Overview?
No, and that's the good news for a three-truck shop. Omnibound's 2026 roundup cites ConvertMate's finding that 83% of Google AI Overview citations come from pages outside the organic top 10. The engine isn't copying the search rankings. It's reading for evidence.
Freshness is a big part of that evidence. The same roundup reports pages refreshed in the last 30 days get 3.2x the citations, and 76% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages were updated in the last month. A review posted this week is fresh content about your business that you didn't have to write. The McKinney website from 2023 is not.
Fresh pages and brand mentions move AI citations the most
Which signals can a contractor actually control?
More than it looks. The Omnibound roundup reports a 0.74 correlation between YouTube mentions and AI visibility, and that brand mentions correlate about three times more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks do.
Neither of those needs an agency. A homeowner saying your company name on camera, posted to YouTube and Facebook, is a brand mention and a YouTube mention in one clip.
An opinion you're welcome to fight us on: a monthly SEO retainer is the worst dollar a contractor spends in 2026. The agency isn't the problem. Ranking fourth for "pool builder McKinney" just buys you very little in a box that pulls 83% of its citations from off the first page.
Reddit is the awkward one. You can't post about yourself there, and you shouldn't. What you can do is make sure that when a homeowner asks "anyone used a good roofer in Arlington," the people who reply have your name fresh in their heads. The list, in the order we'd work it:
- Recent Google reviews, every month. Fresh content about you that Gemini can read and quote. TrueReview's 2026 benchmarks put 6-12 new reviews a month as competitive.
- A YouTube channel with customer clips. Even ten short videos. The 0.74 correlation is the strongest single signal in the data.
- A Facebook page that posts weekly. Peec AI lists Facebook among the domains Google's AI surfaces favor.
- A website page per service with a number on it. The Princeton study found adding statistics lifts AI visibility 30-41%. Job count, years in business, warranty length.
- Your name spelled the same way everywhere. Brand mentions only count if the engine can tell they are about you.
What this means for a pool builder or roofer
Stop thinking about ranking and start thinking about being mentioned. Gemini wants a business other people keep talking about in public, in the last month, on the sites it trusts. Every finished job is a chance to get talked about and most of them go to waste because nobody asked.
Ask for a review after every job. Get a few customers on camera and put the clips on YouTube and Facebook with your company name in the title.
Refresh your service pages twice a year with real numbers (the McKinney builder has 140 reviews and three crews; neither number is on his site). This is the job WorkBrag does for you: one text after the job, the review and the video come back, and the clip is posted for you.
Methodology
Third-party figures come from Orbit Media's 2026 analysis of 13,184 AI citations, Peec AI's AI search statistics page, Omnibound's 2026 generative engine optimization roundup (which compiles ConvertMate and Ahrefs data), the Princeton / KDD 2024 generative engine optimization paper and TrueReview's 2026 review-request benchmarks.
The chart's lift figures come from separate studies and are shown side by side for scale only. Figures marked as WorkBrag modeled estimates are projections built from those public benchmarks and our own launch assumptions, not measured results. We will replace them with measured data from live accounts and update this page.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I show up in Google AI Overviews as a local business?
- Get talked about in the places the engine reads: Reddit, YouTube and Facebook, plus a Google Business Profile with recent reviews. Ranking on page one of regular search is not required; ConvertMate's 2026 analysis found 83% of AI Overview citations come from pages outside the organic top 10.
- Does Gemini use Google reviews when it recommends a contractor?
- Yes, alongside a wide set of other sources. Orbit Media's 2026 study found Gemini cites about 8.1 sources per answer, the most of the major chat engines, and leans toward Reddit threads and list-style pages, so reviews are one input among several.
- Does posting on YouTube help a contractor appear in AI answers?
- The evidence says yes. Omnibound's 2026 roundup reports a 0.74 correlation between YouTube mentions and AI visibility, and Peec AI lists YouTube among the top cited domains for Google AI Mode and AI Overviews. A short customer video on a YouTube channel is a cheap way to be there.
