How to ask for a review by text, not pushy

By Asaf Shamly, founder · Last updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min

A healthy text review request turns into a finished Google review 8-20% of the time, according to TrueReview's 2026 benchmarks, and 74% of homeowners put the most weight on reviews from the last three months (BrightLocal 2026). A text on every job is what keeps your last three months full.

Say you run a plumbing shop in Waxahachie and you finished a $2,400 water heater swap at 3 p.m. on a Tuesday. You mean to ask for the review. By the time you remember, it's Friday, and the homeowner has moved on to the dog, the dishes and a kid's soccer game. The text you send from the driveway at 3:15 is the one that gets answered.

Nobody likes asking. The fix isn't courage, it's a shorter ask, sent at the right moment, with a link that takes one tap. We built our own review text to fire two hours after the job, not the next morning, for exactly this reason.

The reminder does more work than the first text and nobody wants to send it. Send it.

Before you start

  • Your phone, with the homeowner's cell number from the quote.
  • Access to the Google account that owns your Business Profile.
  • The homeowner's first name.

The routine

  1. 1

Step 1 - Get the direct review link

Signed in to the account that owns the profile, search your business name on Google. In the profile panel look for Ask for reviews and copy the short link. Save it in your phone's notes. A direct link opens the review box; a Maps link makes them hunt.

Copying the direct review link A generic phone outline. The screen shows a business profile panel with an Ask for reviews row, then a share box with a short link in a field and one highlighted pill labeled Copy link, with an arrow pointing at it. Ask for reviews Share your review link g.page/r/ . . . /review Copy link tap here, then paste into Notes
You are looking for the short link that appears after you tap Ask for reviews, and the Copy option next to it. It may say Share or show a copy icon instead; the exact label may differ.
  2. 2

Step 2 - Ask in person before you leave

At the walkthrough, say it once: "I am going to text you a review link, it takes about a minute." An expected text gets opened. A surprise text gets ignored.

  3. 3

Step 3 - Send the first text within 2 hours

Same day, while they are still looking at the finished work. TrueReview found that asking more than 48 hours after the job cuts response by about 40%. Use the first script below. Nothing else.

  4. 4

Step 4 - Send one reminder at day 3-5

If nothing has come in by day three, send the reminder script once. TrueReview reports 30-50% of reviews come from that single reminder. Then stop. Two is pressure.

  5. 5

    Step 5 - Send the thank-you

When the review posts, text the thank-you script the same day, then reply to the review on Google in a sentence that names the job. BrightLocal 2026 found people are 80% more likely to use a business that responds to all its reviews.

  6. 6

Step 6 - Never offer anything for a review

No discount, gift card, raffle entry, or free service call and no asking only the happy customers. Ask everyone the same way and offer nothing.

  7. 7

Step 7 - Handle a bad one calmly

Reply publicly within a day. Thank them, state one fact, move it to a phone call: "Thanks for the note, Dana. We were back Tuesday to fix the flashing. Call me directly at [phone]." Never argue. Other homeowners read your answer, not the complaint.

  8. 8

Step 8 - Track it in a simple sheet

One row per job: date, name, first text sent, reminder sent, review in. Check the rate monthly. Under 8% means the text is going out late or to the wrong phone.

The policy note, plainly. Google's review policy prohibits offering anything in exchange for reviews and prohibits asking only satisfied customers.

The FTC's Consumer Reviews and Testimonials rule bans buying reviews and treats undisclosed incentives as deceptive, with civil penalties. Either can get your reviews removed or your profile suspended. A plain ask with a direct link is legal and costs nothing.

The three texts, in order. Copy them word for word.

Three review request text scripts A phone screen with three text bubbles. First, sent within two hours: Hi [First name], it's [Business]. Thanks for having us out today. If you have a minute, a quick Google review helps us more than anything: [Review link]. Second, the one reminder at day three to five: Hi [First name], [Business] again. No pressure, just in case the link got buried. A short review would mean a lot: [Review link]. Third, after the review posts: Thanks for the review, [First name]. The crew read it this morning. Anything comes up with the work, call us anytime. [Business] [First name] TEXT 1, Same day, within 2 hours Hi [First name], it's [Business]. Thanks for having us out today. If you have a minute, a quick Google review helps us more than anything: [Review link] Delivered TEXT 2, Day 3-5, the only reminder Hi [First name], [Business] again. No pressure, just in case the link got buried. A short review would mean a lot: [Review link] Delivered TEXT 3, Same day the review posts Thanks for the review, [First name]. The crew read it this morning. Anything comes up with the work, call us anytime. [Business] Delivered
Swap in the first name, your business name and the direct link from step 1. Each text is under 200 characters. No offer, no second reminder.

Common mistakes

Sending it Friday for a Tuesday job. The 48-hour wall is real. Text from the driveway, engine running if you have to.

Linking to your website or Maps page. Every extra tap loses people. The direct link from step 1 opens the review box itself. Use that one and nothing else.

Long texts. Name, thanks, ask, link. A paragraph about how much reviews mean to a small business gets skimmed and forgotten.

Copy-paste replies. BrightLocal found 50% of people see templated responses negatively. Name the job, name the street if they did (never the number), and sign it.

Connect it to WorkBrag

Once the review link exists, connect your Google Business Profile to WorkBrag and the asking takes care of itself: after each job WorkBrag sends these texts and the one reminder for you, the review and the video come back, and the finished clip is posted to your accounts for you to approve by text.

FAQ

Can I offer a discount for a Google review?

No. Google's review policy forbids offering anything for a review, and the FTC treats undisclosed incentives as deceptive. Google can remove the reviews or suspend the profile.

How many times should I follow up on a review request?

Once. TrueReview's 2026 benchmarks show 30-50% of reviews come from a single reminder sent 3-5 days after the first text. A second one makes the customer feel chased.

What review response rate should a contractor expect from texts?

TrueReview puts the healthy range at 8-20% of text requests turning into a completed Google review, with 25-40% clicking the link.
