The HVAC and plumbing proof stack: 2026 benchmark
By Asaf Shamly, founder · Last updated October 10, 2026 · 6 min read
31% of consumers will only consider a business rated 4.5 or higher, up from 17% a year earlier, and 80% are more likely to use a business that responds to all its reviews.
For an HVAC or plumbing company, where the homeowner is choosing from a phone with a dead AC in a Texas July, those two numbers are most of the sales process: the rating gets you the call, the replies show you answer.
How do homeowners pick an HVAC or plumbing company in an emergency?
Fast, and by the number next to the name. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 41% always read them when searching, up from 29%. Cross-trade figures, not HVAC-only, but a burst pipe doesn't change how people hold a phone.
39%
of homeowners expect a same-day reply, in the closest published trade benchmark
It's 4:40 on a Thursday afternoon in Mesquite, 103 outside, and the AC just quit on a family with a newborn. Nobody is reading your About page. They type "AC repair Mesquite," see six names, and the ones under 4.5 with nothing recent don't get a second look. The whole decision takes maybe ninety seconds.
The cutoff is that harsh. 31% will only consider a business rated 4.5 or higher, and 68% need at least 4 stars, up from 55% a year earlier. A 4.3 with a slow downward drift is how a good shop leaves the shortlist without ever knowing it was on one.
Recency is the second filter. 74% of consumers put the most weight on reviews from the last three months, and 18% want one from the last week.
Where they look is moving too. Google still first at 71%, down from 83%. Facebook second. ChatGPT and other AI tools third at 45%, up from 6% a year earlier, and Apple Maps nearly doubled to 27%. (Apple Maps is the one most shops have never claimed. Check yours.)
How fast do homeowners expect a reply?
The closest published trade benchmark comes from Roofing Contractor magazine's 2026 homeowner survey: 39% expect a same-day reply and 56% expect one within one to two days. Those are roofing homeowners, a trade with far less urgency than a dead compressor.
We haven't measured HVAC reply expectations yet and we'd rather say so than invent a number; our read is that your customers expect faster, and that same-day is the floor, not the target.
Four in ten homeowners expect a reply the same day, and most want one inside two days
Does responding to reviews matter for an HVAC company?
More than in most trades. The emergency buyer reads your replies as a preview of your dispatch. BrightLocal found 80% of consumers are more likely to use a business that responds to all its reviews.
The reply to the angry one about the missed window matters more than ten thank-yous.
Write them yourself. 50% of consumers view templated responses negatively. Three lines from the owner naming the job and the fix beat a paragraph of boilerplate, every time.
And the replies feed the machines. 82% of consumers read AI-generated review summaries, and 40% trust an AI recommendation, per BrightLocal. Those summaries are built from your review text and your replies, so an unanswered complaint doesn't just sit there. It becomes the summary.
How many reviews does a plumbing or HVAC company need?
TrueReview's 2026 benchmarks put the home-services average near 85 Google reviews. 6 to 12 new reviews a month is competitive, and 15 or more a month marks a market leader. A two-truck shop running 60 calls a month has the raw material for the top band, more than any other trade in this series.
Timing decides whether it gets there. TrueReview found a text request converts to a Google review 8 to 20% of the time, 30 to 50% of reviews come from one reminder sent 3 to 5 days later, and asking more than 48 hours after the job cuts response by about 40%.
Our opinion, and plenty of office managers will disagree: the review request should leave from the driveway, not from the office queue the next morning. The next morning is already a third of the way to the 48-hour cliff, and the homeowner has stopped thinking about you.
WorkBrag modeled estimate: a text sent within 2 hours of job completion returns a review on 14% of jobs; sent 3 or more days later, 8%. One reminder at day 3 to 5 adds 5 points.
What this means for an HVAC or plumbing company
- Guard the 4.5. Every call closes with a review request before the van leaves the street, the $189 capacitor swap included.
- Answer every review inside 48 hours, in your own words, bad ones first. That's the 80% figure working for you.
- Get a short phone video from the homeowner whose AC came back on at 9 pm. A 2026 compilation by Testimonial Star found 88% trust a video testimonial as much as a personal recommendation, and nobody is more grateful on camera than someone whose house just got cold again.
- Keep the flow steady between seasons so the newest review is never older than 90 days. This is the job WorkBrag does for you: one text after the job, the review and the video come back, and the clip is posted for you.
Methodology
Third-party figures on this page come from BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, TrueReview's 2026 review-request benchmarks, Roofing Contractor magazine's "The Homeowner's Roofing Journey in 2026" (with Owens Corning and myClearInsights), and a 2026 compilation of video testimonial statistics by Testimonial Star.
BrightLocal, TrueReview and Testimonial Star report cross-trade figures; the reply-time figures were measured among roofing homeowners, flagged where they appear.
Figures marked as WorkBrag modeled estimates are projections built from those public benchmarks and our own launch assumptions, not measured results. We will replace them with measured data from live accounts and update this page.
