The roofer's proof stack: 2026 benchmark
66% of homeowners get three roofing quotes before they pick one, and when the quotes are close, proven experience and certifications decide 46% of the time while strong reviews and testimonials decide 20%. That makes a roofer's proof - certifications on display, recent reviews, a homeowner on camera - the thing that turns a shortlist spot into a signed contract. This page collects the 2026 numbers a roofer should benchmark against.
How do homeowners find a roofer in 2026?
Word of mouth, still. In Roofing Contractor magazine's 2026 homeowner survey, 74% of homeowners said they find a roofer through people they know, and 62% go back to a roofer they've used before.
Then search engines, at 50%. Home-services sites and social media each land around 25%, and AI search sits at 11%, climbing.
Say you run a two-truck roofing outfit in Frisco. Hail comes through on a Tuesday night, and by Wednesday lunch every house on the block has three door-hangers on it, half of them from crews with Oklahoma plates. The homeowner with a $14,000 roof to replace does what everyone does now: asks the neighbor, then pulls out the phone and checks the name the neighbor gave.
That check is where reviews live. 62% of homeowners in the same survey called reviews very or extremely important, and another 30% called them important. A referral gets you named. The review check decides whether the call happens.
What decides the tiebreak between three roofing quotes?
Most roofing jobs are a three-way contest. 66% of homeowners get three quotes, 27% get several, and only 1% take the first one, per Roofing Contractor's survey. After a hail storm in Dallas-Fort Worth, that shortlist fills with out-of-town crews too.
When the quotes are close, proven experience and certifications win 46% of the time. Strong reviews and testimonials decide 20%, and a knowledgeable rep 17%. Two of those three you can show before the rep ever knocks.
That 46% is softer than it looks, and roofers will argue with us on this. A homeowner who ticks "certifications" usually means "some proof this crew has done this before and will still exist in five years," and the manufacturer badge is just the only kind of proof they know how to name. Thirty recent reviews from streets they recognize answer the same question, and answer it better.
Certifications and proof decide two out of three close calls between roofers
How fast do homeowners expect a roofer to reply?
Fast. 56% expect a reply within one to two days and 39% want one the same day, per the same survey. After a storm, the crew that answers first usually gets the inspection.
But the complaints tell you where the trust breaks. Unclear costs (33%), poor communication (23%), delays (23%). 65% said they're more likely to contact a roofer that shows pricing on its site. Every one of those is a trust problem, and a homeowner on camera carries trust better than any brochure in the truck.
How many reviews does a roofer need?
The bar keeps rising. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found 31% of consumers will only consider a business rated 4.5 or higher, up from 17% a year earlier, and 68% need at least 4 stars. Those are cross-trade consumer figures, not roofing-only, but roofing buyers are the same people with the same phones.
74% of consumers put the most weight on reviews from the last three months, and 32% want something from the last two weeks.
A stack of reviews from the 2024 hail season isn't proof anymore. It's history.
For volume, TrueReview's 2026 benchmarks put the home-services average near 85 Google reviews. 6 to 12 new reviews a month is competitive, and 15 or more a month marks a market leader. And you don't get there by asking the happy customers you happen to remember. You get there by asking on every roof, including the insurance job that dragged.
One more number, for the video question. A 2026 compilation by Testimonial Star found 88% of people trust a video testimonial as much as a personal recommendation. That's the 74% word-of-mouth channel, moved onto a phone screen.
WorkBrag modeled estimate: a roofer profile with at least one customer video and 10+ recent reviews draws 32% more quote requests per shortlist appearance than one with text reviews only. Projection, built from the tiebreak and video-trust numbers above. Not measured.
What this means for a roofer
- Put the certifications where the shortlist can see them: Google Business Profile, website header, truck door. That's the 46% factor, and it costs you an afternoon.
- Ask for a review on every finished roof, inside 48 hours. TrueReview's data shows asking later than that cuts response by about 40%. We set our own review text to fire two hours after the crew marks the job done, not the next morning, for exactly this reason.
- Get the homeowner on camera after storm work. Forty seconds of them in the driveway in front of the new roof runs as your ad through the next hail season, and it belongs to you, not to a lead site.
- Reply to every review and every lead the same day. This is the job WorkBrag does for you: one text after the job, the review and the video come back, and the clip is posted to your Facebook, Instagram and TikTok. You approve by text and get back on the roof.
Methodology
Third-party figures on this page come from Roofing Contractor magazine's "The Homeowner's Roofing Journey in 2026" (with Owens Corning and myClearInsights), BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, TrueReview's 2026 review-request benchmarks, and a 2026 compilation of video testimonial statistics by Testimonial Star. BrightLocal and Testimonial Star figures are cross-trade, not roofing-specific. Figures marked as WorkBrag modeled estimates are projections built from those public benchmarks and our own launch assumptions, not measured results. We will replace them with measured data from live accounts and update this page.
