The landscaping and pool proof stack: 2026 benchmark

By Asaf Shamly, founder · Last updated October 13, 2026 · 6 min read

Instagram Reels reach 36% more users than static posts for small accounts, and 34% of consumers now use Instagram to find and vet neighborhood contractors.

Landscaping and pool work is the most photogenic trade there is, but its proof arrives in a spring-and-summer spike and goes stale before the next season's buyers start looking: 74% of consumers weight reviews from the last three months most.

Where do homeowners look before hiring a landscaper or pool builder?

Google first, but not alone. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey puts Google at 71% of consumers, down from 83%, with Facebook second and ChatGPT and other AI tools third at 45%, up from 6% a year earlier. Cross-trade consumer figures; no landscaping-only survey of this size exists.

49%

of US consumers have used TikTok as a search engine

Take a pool builder in McKinney running two crews. The build that broke ground in April fills the first week of July and the homeowner is standing on the new deck with the phone out, thrilled. That's the moment.

By the time that family's neighbor starts pricing a pool in late February, the July review has been sitting on the profile for seven months and the builder hasn't finished anything since Thanksgiving.

The visual channels are where outdoor trades pull ahead. 34% of consumers use Instagram and 23% use TikTok to discover and vet neighborhood contractors, per SociallyIn's 2026 survey.

Pool buyers skew young enough for that to matter. Adobe Express's 2026 study found 49% of US consumers have used TikTok as a search engine, including 65% of Gen Z and 49% of millennials, against 12% of Gen X.

And the rating bar doesn't bend for a pretty grid. 31% of consumers will only consider a business rated 4.5 or higher, per BrightLocal, up from 17% a year earlier.

Why does a visual trade win on video?

The finished yard sells itself, and the homeowner standing in it sells harder. Before-and-after posts get about three times the engagement of other post types, with video walkthroughs second, according to PipelineOn's contractor social data.

A dirt hole to a finished deck is the best before-and-after in the trades, and you get one on every build.

Reach favors motion. Instagram Reels reach 36% more users than static posts for small accounts, per WideFocus 2026.

A face does the rest. A 2026 compilation by Testimonial Star found 88% of people trust a video testimonial as much as a personal recommendation. Video testimonials draw about 12x the shares of text reviews and hold a 76% completion rate against 31% for promo videos. (Nobody finishes a promo video. People finish watching a neighbor.)

How does the season drain a landscaper's review flow?

Jobs bunch up. Installs, pool builds and spring cleanups pile into the second and third quarter, so the reviews do too. Then the asking stops, and the newest review ages through the winter while next spring's buyers start searching.

So pool builders don't have a marketing problem. They have a February problem.

74% of consumers put the most weight on reviews from the last three months, 32% want one from the last two weeks, and 18% from the last week, per BrightLocal.

WorkBrag modeled estimate: a review's weight in a homeowner's eyes falls to about 50% at 90 days and about 20% at 12 months. The July review is at half strength by October and running on fumes when the McKinney neighbor starts looking.

TrueReview's 2026 benchmarks set the competitive pace at 6 to 12 new Google reviews a month. Asking more than 48 hours after the job cuts response by about 40%, so the crew's last day on site is the day to ask, fill day included.

Texting every finished job roughly triples the review flow, quarter after quarter

Modeled new reviews per quarter, text after every job versus ask when you remember For each of four quarters, two bars. Text after every job: about 15 new reviews a quarter. Ask when you remember: about 5 new reviews a quarter. WorkBrag modeled estimate built on 12 jobs a month. 0 5 10 15 Text after every job Ask when you remember 15 15 15 15 5 5 5 5 Q1 Q2 Q3 Q4
WorkBrag modeled estimate, see methodology. New Google reviews per quarter for a 1-3 person shop at 12 jobs a month: about 5 a month with a text after every job, about 1.7 asking when you remember. The model is flat; a seasonal shop's Q2 and Q3 bars run taller and Q4 and Q1 shorter.

We drew that chart flat on purpose. We don't have a seasonal shop's real curve yet, and we'd rather show you the model as a model than draw a summer hump we haven't measured. When live accounts give us one, the chart changes and so does the date at the top of this page.

What this means for a landscaper or pool builder

  1. Shoot the before on day one of every install, and shoot the after as a walking clip, not a still. That's the 3x post and the 36% reach in one file.
  2. Ask for the review on the last day on site, every job, including the $400 sprinkler repair and the fall cleanup that fill the off-season. Those are what keep your newest review inside 90 days in February.
  3. Ask the homeowner for a phone video by the finished pool or yard. At the modeled rate of one video per roughly 5 to 8 reviews, a busy quarter should hand you two or three clips.
  4. Post through the winter from summer footage so the grid never looks closed. This is the job WorkBrag does for you: one text after the job, the review and the video come back, and the clip is posted to your Facebook, Instagram and TikTok for you.

Methodology

Third-party figures on this page come from BrightLocal's Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, Adobe Express's 2026 TikTok search study of 807 US consumers, and SociallyIn's 2026 survey along with PipelineOn and WideFocus contractor social benchmarks compiled by Webtonic.

Review-request figures are TrueReview's 2026 benchmarks, and the video testimonial statistics come from a 2026 compilation by Testimonial Star.

None of these sources is landscaping- or pool-specific; all are cross-trade figures, flagged where they appear.

Figures marked as WorkBrag modeled estimates are projections built from those public benchmarks and our own launch assumptions, not measured results. We will replace them with measured data from live accounts and update this page.

Frequently asked questions

Where do homeowners look before hiring a landscaper or pool builder?
Google first at 71%, then Facebook, then AI tools such as ChatGPT at 45%, per BrightLocal's 2026 survey. 34% of consumers also use Instagram and 23% use TikTok to vet neighborhood contractors, per SociallyIn. These are cross-trade consumer figures.
Do Reels work better than photos for a landscaping company?
For reach, yes. Instagram Reels reach 36% more users than static posts for small accounts, per WideFocus 2026, and a homeowner on camera carries more trust than a caption: 88% trust a video testimonial as much as a personal recommendation.
How do I keep reviews coming in the off-season?
Ask on every job you do finish, within 48 hours, including maintenance visits and winter builds. 74% of consumers weight reviews from the last three months most, so a review from June has lost most of its pull by the time spring buyers start searching.
