Set up an Instagram business account for your trade

How to set up an Instagram business account and link it to your Facebook Page
Why this matters. 34% of consumers use Instagram to find and vet neighborhood contractors (SociallyIn 2026). For small accounts, Reels reach 36% more people than still photos (WideFocus 2026). A homeowner scrolling your before and afters at 9pm is a quote request you did not have to pay for.
Say you do kitchen remodels in Frisco, three people, eight or nine jobs a year at $40,000 and up. A couple on a Sunday night is on the couch looking for ideas, lands on your before and afters, taps the Call button under your bio, and leaves a voicemail. You didn't pay for that call. You paid twenty minutes, once, to set the account up right.
Highlights matter more than the grid for a contractor. She taps Before/After before she scrolls a single post, so build those first and let the grid fill in behind them.
Before you start
- Your phone with the Instagram app installed
- The business email you used for the Facebook Page
- Your Facebook Page login (finish that guide first)
- Logo file, license number, business phone
- Three before and after photo pairs from recent jobs
The steps
- 1
Step 1 - Download the app and sign up with the business email
Install Instagram, tap Create new account, and use the business email. Not a personal one, not a crew member's. Whoever owns the email owns the account.
- 2
Step 2 - Set the username to match Facebook
Use the same handle as your Facebook Page, for example ramirezroofingplano. If it is taken, add your state. Same name everywhere means one search finds all of you.
- 3
Step 3 - Switch to a professional account
Go to your profile, tap the Menu icon, then Settings and activity. Look for Account type and tools, then Switch to professional account. Choose Business, not Creator. Labels move around; the goal is a screen that asks Business or Creator.
You are looking for a row that says Switch to professional account, usually under Account type and tools in Settings. The exact label and its place in the list may differ. - 4
Step 4 - Pick the category and add contact info
Type your trade and pick Roofing Service, Contractor, Plumbing Service or the closest match. Turn on Display on profile. Add the business phone and email so Call and Email buttons show up under your bio.
- 5
Step 5 - Link the Facebook Page
Instagram offers this during the switch. If you skipped it, go to Settings and activity, then Business tools and controls, then Connect or create under Facebook Page. Log in with the profile that owns the Page and pick it. This link lets posting tools publish for you.
- 6
Step 6 - Write the bio
Use this order: trade, towns, license number, phone, one link. Example: Roof repair and replacement. Plano, Frisco, Allen. TX Lic 12345. (972) 555-0100. Put your Google review link or website in the link field. No emoji strings.
- 7
Step 7 - Set up highlight covers
Post three Stories, then save them to highlights named Before/After, Crew and Reviews. Make plain covers in your brand color with one word each. Highlights sit under the bio and get tapped first.
- 8
Step 8 - Turn on two-factor authentication
Go to Accounts Center, then Password and security, then Two-factor authentication. Use an authenticator app, not text message. A stolen account gets sold or used to scam your customers within a day.
Common mistakes
Signing up with a personal email or a crew member's phone number. When they leave, the account leaves with them, and so do two years of job photos.
Picking Creator because it sounded friendlier. Creator hides the category and doesn't connect cleanly to Page tools. Business, every time.
Hashtag walls. Three max, local and specific: #PlanoRoofing, #FriscoRoofer, #CollinCountyRoofing. Thirty hashtags reads as spam to a homeowner and, we suspect, to Instagram too.
But the one that costs the most is skipping the Facebook link because it asked for a second login. We wince every time it does that to a contractor, and Meta gives no other door. Nothing can post for you without it, so log in twice and be done.
What to post first
Post 1: three before and afters as one carousel, before on the left, after on the right, same spot, one line naming the town. Post 2: a 15-second Reel walking the finished job, phone held vertical, natural sound, town and trade as text on screen. Post 3: one crew photo with first names.
Then one job a week. Not the best job. Whatever you finished Friday.
Connect it to WorkBrag
Once the account exists, connect it to WorkBrag and the posting takes care of itself: after each job one text goes to the homeowner, the review and the video come back, and the finished clip is posted to this account for you to approve by text. If you already have a WorkBrag account, connect Instagram under Connections. If not, start with your free WorkBrag Score.
FAQ
- Business or Creator account for a contractor?
- Business. It shows your category and contact buttons on the profile and connects to the Facebook Page tools you need for scheduling and posting.
- Why do I have to link a Facebook Page?
- Meta runs scheduling, messaging and third-party posting through the Facebook Page. Without the link, nothing can post to Instagram on your behalf.
- How many hashtags should I use?
- Three at most, all local or trade specific. Long hashtag strings look like spam to homeowners and to Instagram.
